At
this point both bands arrive to a landmark
moment of crisis, which threaten their
existence. Only drastic steps, and a
special receptiveness while traveling
in tricky and dark terrains, avoided
a split.
Tired of the absurdity
that their tours and live concerts
became, The Beatles
took a radical decision. They abstained
from touring. This found them some breathing
space, however minimum, and allowed them
to concentrate solely on the studio,
saving them from break-up and giving
way to their most imaginative work. By
adopting the public persona of “Sgt.
Pepper’s Lonely Harts Club Band”,
The Beatles invented a caricature that
allowed them to make fun of themselves,
and relate with the public in a healthier
way.
Absorbing hard press criticism for
Rattle and Hum, U2 set themselves to “dream
it all up again” and for a change
headed to Hansa Studios in Germany,
only to find themselves crashed into
a brick wall of inner band conflicts
and creative dryness which brought
them close to ending the band. As a
gift after much struggle, emerged “One” and
launched them to create their sonic
masterpiece “Achtung Baby”.
To sincere the outcome of their inner
and outer realities, U2 created Zoo
TV and Zooropa; eclectic live shows
headed by the personas of “The
Fly” and “Macphisto”.
